OUR STORY
The founders of NASEEJ are fourth generation weavers. Their great grandfather Saeed Mardini, was a talented textile technician who fled his hometown Mardin (a town located on the outskirts of modern day Turkish Kurdistan) when he was just a teenager during World War I. Initially, he found refuge in Syria where he married and started a family. A few years later, Saeed decided to move once again. He boarded a boat with his then small family and a very few possessions in the late 1930’s to the shores of Alexandria, and from there he chose to settle in Cairo.
Saeed and his two eldest sons opened their very first textile mill in Cairo in the mid 1940s. As business grew, they opened their first showroom in the 1950’s in Central Cairo’s most prestigious shopping district, 26 July Street in Abdeen. Shortly after, they opened their second showroom in Qasr El Nile, also in Central Cairo. Over the years, the family’s name became synonymous with premium quality velvets, upholstery textiles and exceptional design. Over the following decades, each of Saeed’s sons branched out to build his own brand and production facility. They utilised the unparalleled know-how they gained from their father, and kept his legacy and teachings alive as their businesses flourished, turning “Mardini” into a household name in the textile industry.
The founders of NASEEJ, Mohamed and Rana, are the grandchildren of Assaad, the eldest of Saeed’s children. Assaad was a pioneer in his own right. He built his textile mill in the late 1980s with the aid of his son Gamaleldin, an ambitious engineer with a good design eye. Together, they went on to export to Italy, Lebanon, and the Gulf. Mohamed and Rana then co-founded NASEEJ in 2016 with a desire to spark a movement that would revive Egypt’s once-thriving textile industry after it suffered major blows during the political unrest that ensued in Egypt between 2011-15.
Mohamed and Rana utilized their family’s decades worth of technical know-how and their state-of-the-art textile mill, and built NASEEJ on the premise that the future is for those who champion innovation, collaboration, and authentic design. Today, both of them work hand-in-hand along with their ever-growing team to realise their vision, and to create an eco-system that supports local supply chains that are the industry’s true backbone.
